And my personal favorite quote from a client just this past week, “These shafts feel better than sex!”
You might read the above mentioned quotes and automatically assume these players are referring to the latest graphite driver shaft, but would it surprise you to find that these quotes all come from single digit, scratch, and professional golfers who came to see us for an iron fitting? Brandt Snedeker, Matt Kuchar, Fred Couples, and many other PGA pros experienced something they were not expecting, they fit into a graphite iron shaft! How can this be? Graphite iron shafts are for ladies and slow swinging grandpas, right?
Well you are partially right. Players with slower swing speeds have been able to benefit from the lightweight, high-launching graphite shafts that companies have developed throughout the years. However, many players do not realize that some very significant advancements have happened within the last couple of years to provide the benefits of graphite shafts to players of all skill levels, even players with PGA Tour swing speeds. There are not many players in the world who are still playing steel shafts in their driver, fairway woods, or hybrids, and soon there will not be many playing steel in their irons. Brandt Snedeker, Matt Kuchar, Fred Couples, and many other PGA professionals have switched to graphite iron shafts, and shaft manufactures are banking on graphite iron shafts being the norm within the next 10 years. These shaft manufactures have been perfecting graphite shaft design, performance, and production since they first launched in the early ’70s, with the majority of the R&D time and money focused on producing drivers and fairway woods which provide optimal launch and playing characteristics for every skill level. Now that graphite shafts dominate the driver and long game market, shaft companies have expanded their focus and have experienced breakthroughs in graphite iron shaft design and production, which have produced unmatched iron shaft options and performance. With shaft weights ranging from 40 grams to 130 grams and shaft flexes ranging from extremely soft to extremely stiff, graphite iron shafts are able to produce ball flight and spin options within the full spectrum of player skill.
Since a big part of our business as a custom equipment provider is consumer education – and because it is an absolutely critical part of the conversation – I have to make the distinction that not all graphite shafts are created equal. This goes for every club in the bag. There are differing qualities of materials and processes used in the mass production of stock off the rack equipment, including “no upcharge” upgrades, compared to the materials and processes used in the aftermarket products available through custom golf companies like The Club Fix.
Off the rack stock shafts may have the same name as the real deal, but subtle changes in paint color and weight labeling distinguish the differences from the true performer. Shaft makers use lower quality materials to produce these types of watered-down shafts that can be sold to club companies for very low costs. It’s a volume play on both sides. With lower quality shaft materials comes lower quality feel, consistency, and performance.
Now not only those players filled with estrogen or players suffering from reduced testosterone are able to experience the benefits of high quality graphite iron shafts, but golfing studs bursting with swing speed and sweating machismo can experience the unmatched feel of a high quality graphite shaft fit for their game. I may not go as far as saying it’s better than sex, but I’m not going to argue with you if you say it is. Don’t take my word for it; put it to the test and experience it for yourself.
